The Six Ways of Ruling

Heart Advice for Creating Enlightened Society

King Dawa Sangpo, the first sovereign of the Kingdom of Shambhala, received the sacred teachings on enlightened society from the Buddha.

The Six Ways of Ruling are unique teachings on society and leadership. They are a distinctive aspect of Shambhala  wisdom on creating enlightened society. They were first taught by the Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and then made public by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche in his book, Ruling Your World.

The Sakyong has asked the President of Shambhala, Richard Reoch, to ensure that members of our community become familiar with these teachings, and incorporate their insight and practical advice into our lives and work – and into working together to develop Shambhala culture.

“The history and legend of Shambhala is based upon a great community that was able to reach a higher level of consciousness. This community could occur because its members participated fully in creating a culture of kindness, generosity and courage,” wrote The Sakyong, Jamgön Mipham Rinpoche, in his Letter of the Morning Sun.

Watch the video below for a three-minute “trailer” of highlights and hilarities from the 35 films and recordings President Reoch has made for this multilingual offering to our mandala!

Who made this possible?

A huge amount of work has gone into designing and delivering this multi-faceted and multilingual package for The Six Ways of Ruling. Some of the work has been done by volunteers: President Reoch, Hamish Maclaren, Peter Bancel, Catherine Eveillard, Rohini Schiff, Antonio Plana, Fernando Alonso López, Luz Rodriguez, Chris Calitz, Tony MacAdam, Sarah Farash and Brian McCorkle. Many others helped coordinate and staff the programs in London, Barcelona and Paris. Supplemental reading and study materials were provided by Acharya David Schneider, Shastri David Sable, and The Governance as Path Working Group.

Pulling a huge project like this all together is one of the responsibilities of the central services of our mandala. This project involved the work of Anna Weinstein, Director of Centre and Group support, as well as Carolyn Mandelker, the Executive Director. The computer services were provided by Pawel Molenda, our international web programmer.

It is impossible to estimate the total cost of the months (actually, years) of work that went into this, let alone the total value of the countless hours of all the volunteers. It’s a living example of the way in which we are all working together to marshall our volunteer expertise, as well as the work of our paid staff to provide a global service.

When you register, as an individual or for your centre or group, you will be given the opportunity to make an offering in support of this effort. If you would like make an offering for the contemplations, click here.
